About Us

Who we are and why we exist

Who is Ethical Mechanic?

A community-driven platform promoting transparency, honesty, and professionalism in auto repair. We connect car owners with trustworthy mechanics — both traditional auto repair shops and mobile mechanics — and provide resources to make informed decisions.

What is the purpose of Ethical Mechanic?

To hold the automotive repair industry accountable. We educate consumers, spotlight ethical shops and mobile mechanics, and build a movement that demands better standards across the entire industry.

What makes a mechanic “ethical”?

An ethical mechanic operates with transparency, charges fair prices, only recommends repairs that are actually needed, carries proper licensing and insurance, and treats every customer with honesty. It applies equally to auto repair shops and mobile mechanics.

Is Ethical Mechanic a government organization?

No. We are an independent organization dedicated to consumer advocacy and industry reform. We are not affiliated with any government agency, but we encourage reporting fraud to your state Attorney General and the FTC.

For Car Owners

Finding help and staying protected

How do I find a trusted mechanic?

Browse our directory of verified mechanics who have committed to ethical standards. Check their credentials, read reviews, and confirm they are licensed, ASE certified, and insured before hiring.

Do you cover my state?

Our goal is to build a nationwide directory covering all 50 states. We are actively expanding our listings. If your area is not covered yet, check back soon — we are adding new mechanics and shops regularly.

How do I report a scam mechanic?

If you have been scammed by an auto repair shop or mobile mechanic, document everything — receipts, texts, photos — and report it to your state Attorney General, the Better Business Bureau, and visit our scam awareness page for a full step-by-step guide.

Should I hire a mobile mechanic or go to a shop?

Both can be great options. Mobile mechanics offer convenience and often lower overhead costs. Traditional shops have specialized equipment for bigger jobs. The key is verifying credentials either way — business license, ASE certification, and liability insurance.

For Mechanics & Shops

Getting listed and standing out

How do I list my business?

It is free. Visit our Find a Mechanic page to learn more about adding your shop or mobile mechanic business to our directory and connecting with customers who value honest work.

Do you include mobile mechanics in the directory?

Absolutely. Mobile mechanics are a vital part of the auto repair industry and have been for over 15 years. If you are a mobile mechanic operating with proper credentials and integrity, we want you in our directory.

Is there a cost to be listed?

No. Basic directory listings are completely free for all auto repair shops and mobile mechanics. We believe every ethical mechanic deserves visibility, regardless of their budget.

How does your verification process work?

We check for three core credentials: a valid business license, ASE certification, and liability insurance. Mechanics who meet all three requirements receive a verified badge in our directory, giving customers confidence in their professionalism.

Terms of Use

§ I. What You’re Getting

A fast, AI-generated snapshot of publicly available information about a mechanic — business registration, online reputation, certifications, and red flags. It’s a screening tool, not a court-admissible verdict. Treat it as one signal among many.

§ II. What the AI Can’t See

We don’t have real-time access to government licensing databases, court records, or sealed BBB complaints. Some businesses keep deliberately thin online footprints. The AI can also misread or miss things. Always verify a mechanic’s credentials directly with your state licensing authority before any major decision.

§ III. Use It Right

This tool is for personal consumer research — you, looking at a mechanic. Don’t use it to harass anyone, defame a business, sabotage a competitor, or scrape reports in bulk. Misuse will get your access cut off.

§ IV. Your Data

We store your email so we can deliver the report and re-send it if needed. Reports are kept for up to seven days, then archived. We don’t sell your data, share it with the mechanic being verified, or hand it to advertisers.

§ V. The Fine Print

Reports are informational. Ethical Mechanic isn’t liable for decisions you make based on what they say. If you spot something inaccurate about a business in a report, email us and we’ll review it.
