Driver's ed teaches teens how to parallel park. It doesn't teach them what to do when the check engine light comes on, how to read a repair estimate, or how to know if a mobile mechanic they found online is legitimate. That second set of skills is arguably more important for their long-term financial wellbeing — and almost nobody teaches it.
What Every Teen Driver Should Know Before They're on Their Own
These aren't advanced concepts. They're basics that most adults learned the hard way:
- How to check oil level and what it should look like — dark and low means something, golden and full means something else
- What the dashboard warning lights mean — at minimum: oil pressure, battery, coolant temperature, and check engine
- What tire pressure is and how to check it — and that the correct number is on the door jamb, not the tire
- What an oil change interval actually is — based on the owner's manual, not whatever the shop's sticker says
- That they can always say "let me call my parent" before authorizing anything
That last one is the most important. No shop can force an immediate decision. Any shop that pressures a teenager into an immediate yes should be walked away from.
Finding Their Own Shop
Teach teens not to use whoever is closest or cheapest, but to look for:
- ASE certification displayed in the shop
- Google reviews that mention honest communication and no surprise charges
- A shop that explains repairs in plain language — not one that talks over you or dismisses questions
- Clear written estimates before any work begins
Taking a teen to your own trusted shop and introducing them before they need it is worth an hour of your time.
Understanding Repair Estimates
When a shop hands over an estimate, a teen should know to:
- Look for labor hours versus parts cost — a $500 estimate that's $450 labor for a 30-minute job is a red flag
- Ask which items are required now versus recommended for later
- Never feel obligated to approve everything on the list in one visit
- Take a photo of the estimate and send it to a parent or trusted adult if anything looks off

Mobile Mechanics and Young Drivers
Mobile mechanics are convenient and often legitimate — but they're also an area where scams targeting inexperienced drivers happen. If a teen is considering calling a mobile mechanic:
- They should verify the mechanic has a business name, license, and verifiable reviews
- Payment should never be demanded entirely upfront before work begins
- A parent should be looped in for anything beyond a basic service
Basic Skills Worth Learning
Even without going full DIY, teens benefit from knowing:
- How to add air to tires at a gas station
- How to check and add windshield washer fluid
- How to jump-start a car (or use a jump pack)
- How to change a flat tire — or at least know where the spare is
