Finding a good mobile mechanic has real advantages: no waiting rooms, no tow truck fees, work done in your driveway while you're home. But the mobile mechanic space has a lower barrier to entry than a traditional shop, which means it attracts both great independent technicians and people running scams.
The difference between a great experience and losing $500 usually comes down to whether you did five minutes of homework first.
Here's how to vet a mobile mechanic before you commit to anything.
1. Verify the Business License
Every legitimate mobile mechanic operating as a business should have a business license registered with their state or county. Ask for the license number, then look it up in your state's business registry (most states have a searchable online database).
If they can't give you a number, or the name doesn't match what you find, that's a problem.
2. Check for ASE Certification
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification isn't legally required in most states, but it's the industry standard for demonstrating technical competence. Certified technicians have passed written tests in specific areas — brakes, engine repair, electrical systems, and so on.
Ask directly: "Are you ASE certified, and in what areas?" A legitimate tech can answer that question specifically. Vague answers like "yeah I'm certified" without being able to name the certifications are a yellow flag.

3. Confirm They Carry Insurance
If a mobile mechanic damages your vehicle while working on it, you want to know there's coverage for that. Ask: "Do you carry general liability insurance?"

4. Search Reviews Across Multiple Platforms
Don't just check one platform. Google, Yelp, Facebook, and Nextdoor can all have reviews. Search the mechanic's full name and business name together.
Also search their name plus "complaint," "scam," or "fraud." News stories, Reddit threads, and community Facebook groups often surface problems that formal review sites don't.

5. Ask for References

The quote should include parts, labor, and any fees — in writing. If a mobile mechanic balks at putting the estimate in writing, that's your answer.
7. Don't Pay the Full Amount Upfront
