How to Vet a Mobile Mechanic Before You Hand Over Your Keys

A mobile mechanic can save you time and money — but only if they're actually who they say they are. Here's how to check.

How to Vet a Mobile Mechanic Before You Hand Over Your Keys

Finding a good mobile mechanic has real advantages: no waiting rooms, no tow truck fees, work done in your driveway while you're home. But the mobile mechanic space has a lower barrier to entry than a traditional shop, which means it attracts both great independent technicians and people running scams.

The difference between a great experience and losing $500 usually comes down to whether you did five minutes of homework first.

Here's how to vet a mobile mechanic before you commit to anything.

1. Verify the Business License

Every legitimate mobile mechanic operating as a business should have a business license registered with their state or county. Ask for the license number, then look it up in your state's business registry (most states have a searchable online database).

If they can't give you a number, or the name doesn't match what you find, that's a problem.

2. Check for ASE Certification

ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification isn't legally required in most states, but it's the industry standard for demonstrating technical competence. Certified technicians have passed written tests in specific areas — brakes, engine repair, electrical systems, and so on.

Ask directly: "Are you ASE certified, and in what areas?" A legitimate tech can answer that question specifically. Vague answers like "yeah I'm certified" without being able to name the certifications are a yellow flag.

You can also verify ASE credentials at ase.com.

3. Confirm They Carry Insurance

If a mobile mechanic damages your vehicle while working on it, you want to know there's coverage for that. Ask: "Do you carry general liability insurance?"

A professional mobile mechanic carries it. If they say they don't need it, or get evasive, move on.

4. Search Reviews Across Multiple Platforms

Don't just check one platform. Google, Yelp, Facebook, and Nextdoor can all have reviews. Search the mechanic's full name and business name together.

Also search their name plus "complaint," "scam," or "fraud." News stories, Reddit threads, and community Facebook groups often surface problems that formal review sites don't.

"One bad review happens to everyone. A pattern of complaints — especially ones describing the same behavior — is a clear signal."

5. Ask for References

Any mobile mechanic with a real customer base should be able to connect you with a recent client who'll speak to their work. It's a reasonable ask. If they deflect or can't come up with anyone, take that seriously.

6. Get a Written Estimate Before Work Starts

The quote should include parts, labor, and any fees — in writing. If a mobile mechanic balks at putting the estimate in writing, that's your answer.

7. Don't Pay the Full Amount Upfront

A deposit for parts — typically 25–50% — is reasonable and expected when parts need to be ordered. Paying 100% before a single bolt has been touched gives you zero leverage if something goes wrong.

Pay by credit card when possible. It's the one payment method that gives you a real dispute option.

EthicalMechanic.org covers both shop-based and mobile mechanics because honest work is honest work regardless of where it happens. The checklist above takes maybe ten minutes. It's worth it.

Terms of Use

§ I. What You’re Getting

A fast, AI-generated snapshot of publicly available information about a mechanic — business registration, online reputation, certifications, and red flags. It’s a screening tool, not a court-admissible verdict. Treat it as one signal among many.

§ II. What the AI Can’t See

We don’t have real-time access to government licensing databases, court records, or sealed BBB complaints. Some businesses keep deliberately thin online footprints. The AI can also misread or miss things. Always verify a mechanic’s credentials directly with your state licensing authority before any major decision.

§ III. Use It Right

This tool is for personal consumer research — you, looking at a mechanic. Don’t use it to harass anyone, defame a business, sabotage a competitor, or scrape reports in bulk. Misuse will get your access cut off.

§ IV. Your Data

We store your email so we can deliver the report and re-send it if needed. Reports are kept for up to seven days, then archived. We don’t sell your data, share it with the mechanic being verified, or hand it to advertisers.

§ V. The Fine Print

Reports are informational. Ethical Mechanic isn’t liable for decisions you make based on what they say. If you spot something inaccurate about a business in a report, email us and we’ll review it.
